Wheat futures are trading higher this morning, up 7 to 9 cents in the JULY 2024 futures. The futures were trading both sides of unchanged early in the session, looking like the 200-day moving average was holding as resistance on the Sept CHI SRW chart, but we are seeing 5-10 cents in the green as the session goes on. Wheat markets continue to see support from dryness concerns in Russia and Fund short covering. If you're a speculator currently real short in your wheat position (sell high - buy back low = profits) you don't want to be caught on the wrong side of a major weather rally (if that is what we are currently in). Weekly US export sales report came in about as expected, with Corn being above expectations, Soybeans below, and wheat at about the upper third of the expected range.
Most of the US Midwest is expecting a couple rounds of rain over the next 5 days. As far as the critical US HRW areas, they are predicting 50% coverage of 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches with some location's possibly receiving as much as 6 inches. Unfortunately, the far western areas of Kansas and Oklahoma are expected to be in the 50% of the region that will be missed, which keeps a little weather premium in the wheat market.
Argentina is still worried about the corn leaf hopper issue in their corn crop. This insect spreads a disease called spiroplasma that can cause yield losses of 5 to 100%, depending on how early the plant is infected. It is early to know the full impact this will have on the total production in Argentina. A cold winter would be the best defense against the growth of these leafhoppers as they don't tolorate temperatures below about 39 degrees F but the latest forecasts show a relatively mild winter on its way.
Cash Futures Prices: Chicago JULY is up 8 cents at 621. KC JULY is up 9 at 639 and MPLS JULY is up 7 at 693. US Dollar is trading 0.21 lower at 105.65.
