Wheat futures are trading higher this morning, up 7 to 10 cents in the JULY 2024 futures. Seeing some follow-through buying from yesterday's rally into this morning in the wheat futures as speculators try to even up some of their short positions in response to the dryness in the Russian wheat and a reduction in US wheat conditions. In a nutshell, the Russian wheat crop had seen a good start with plenty of moisture over the winter months but the moisture has been lacking for quite some time. Still early enough that a good stretch of rain will get everything back on track for a whopper of a crop, but there isn't much in the forecast for rain and the traders are starting to get itchy. If you're currently real short in your wheat position (sell high - buy back low = profits) you don't want to be caught on the wrong side of a major weather rally.
With the latest US weekly crop condition report showing an overall decrease down to 50% good/excellent (from 55% good/excellent last week) it just adds a little more fuel to the fire. In the US, the Soft Red Winter crop is improved but continued dryness in Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma is causing concern for the Hard Red Winter crop which brings the overall US wheat condition down 5% from last week.
There are also reports of the corn leafhopper attacking the corn crop in Argentina. This insect spreads a disease called spiroplasma that can cause yield losses of 5 to 100%, depending on how early the plant is infected. It is early to know the full impact this will have on the total production in Argentina. The US Dollar has also been trading lower over the last week which is helpfut for US exports.
Cash Futures Prices: Chicago JULY is up 10 cents at 598. KC JULY is up 9 at 612 and MPLS JULY is up 7 at 670. US Dollar is trading 0.36 lower at 105.72.
